Mobility and MS

Standing and walking is a complex task that is easily disrupted by symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiffness and balance problems. A variety of studies are underway to address this.
Footdrop-failure of the toes to clear the ground while walking.
Functional muscle stimulation has been applied to try and help lift the foot during walking. Basic functional electrical muscle stimulators ( FES devices) are available but their use in MS is poorly evaluated and more advanced devices are needed to significantly improve function over the wide range of walking problems seen in MS. Work on such devices is underway.
